Sound familiar?

You’ve been carrying it a long time.

Grief doesn’t always look like sadness. In men, it usually shows up wearing something else.

On the outside

The short fuse. The 70-hour week. The drink that turns into three. You’re functioning, but something’s off, and the people around you can feel it.

On the inside

You think you should be over it by now. Talking about it feels like weakness. So you say “I’m fine,” and you keep carrying it.

The truth

No man should have to carry a loss in silence.

Your guide

“I couldn’t talk about losing my dad. When I finally did, other men started telling me about their losses too. Again and again I heard: I’ve never told anybody that.”

I’m Joe McGarry.

In 2014, my dad had a stroke that took his ability to speak. He died in May 2020. For a long time, I couldn’t talk about it, even though I’d spent years sitting with other men in hospital rooms, prisons, and at kitchen tables late at night.

I built The Road Back for men like me: men who are good at carrying things, and tired of carrying this one alone. I won’t fix you or lecture you. I’ll walk beside you, and so will the other men in the group.

What it is

Men talk shoulder to shoulder.

Most men would never walk into a grief support group. So this isn’t one. It’s built for the way men actually open up.

What it isn’t

  • Therapy, or a replacement for a good counselor
  • A lecture, or anyone telling you how to feel
  • A program to fix you. You’re not broken.
  • A place where you have to cry on cue
  • Religious. Nobody will preach at you.

What it is

  • A small group of up to 10 men walking through real loss
  • A coach who has been down this road himself
  • Weekly online meetings you can join from anywhere
  • Practical tools you can use that same week
  • What’s said on the road stays on the road

The road, mile by mile

Three stretches. Six months.

February 1 to August 1, walked together.

Months 1–2

Walking away

Name what you lost, and what you had hoped for. Spot the rules you learned about how a man handles loss, and the disguises your grief has been wearing.

Months 3–4

Carrying it

Build your 2 a.m. list for the nights when it all comes back. Work through the losses that hit hardest, including the ones that never got a funeral.

Months 5–6

The road back

Plan for the hard dates ahead. Grow your life around the loss, carry its legacy forward, and learn to walk back for someone else.

Why six months?

Trust takes timeMost men need a few weeks before they say the real thing.
Hard dates comeYou’ll face birthdays and anniversaries with men who check on you.
Habits need repsNew ways of carrying it need time to stick.
A standing appointmentEvery week, people who know what you’re carrying.

Why it matters

Where the road can lead

If nothing changes

  • Unspoken grief doesn’t disappear. It shows up in your marriage, your body, your work, your temper.
  • You keep pulling back from the people who love you most.
  • It keeps showing up at 2 a.m., and you keep facing it alone.

What can change

  • You can talk about it without coming apart.
  • You carry it differently, and it stops running your life.
  • You have a plan for the hard dates, and men who’ll pick up the phone.
  • You’re not alone on this road anymore.

Every man’s road is different, and grief doesn’t come with guarantees. But no man has to walk it alone.

Questions

Straight answers

Is this therapy?

No. The Road Back is grief coaching and peer support. It isn’t a substitute for counseling or medical care. If what you’re carrying needs a licensed counselor, Joe will tell you, and help you find one.

Do I have to talk in front of other guys?

Not until you’re ready. Plenty of men spend the first few sessions mostly listening. Nobody gets put on the spot, and nobody has to cry on cue.

Is it religious?

No. It’s for every man, whatever you believe or don’t. Nobody will preach at you. If faith is part of your story, you’re welcome to bring it.

What kind of loss counts?

Any loss that’s still weighing on you. The death of a parent, wife, child, brother, or friend. Divorce. Estrangement. A career that ended. A child lost to addiction. If you’re carrying it, it counts.

What if my loss was a long time ago?

Grief doesn’t expire. Some men join a few months after a loss. Others are carrying something from twenty years ago that they’ve never talked about. Both belong here.

How does the payment plan work?

You pay $500 today, then $500 a month for the next five months, for six payments in all ($3,000 total). Paying in full is $2,500 and saves you $500.

Is what I share confidential?

The group agrees that what’s said on the road stays on the road.

Can I talk to Joe before I sign up?

Yes. Book a conversation and ask anything. No pressure, and no commitment just for talking.
